Just a few kilometers off the coast of CancĂșn, this charming Caribbean island is easily accessible by ferry and promises an unforgettable experience.


Getting there by ferry

The ferry ride from CancĂșn to Isla Mujeres takes about 25 to 30 minutes. Prices vary depending on the provider and departure point:

  • Ultramar Ferry: From Puerto JuĂĄrez, a round-trip ticket for adults costs 580 MXN (approx. 32 USD).
  • Xcaret Xailing: From El Embarcadero in the Hotel Zone, a round-trip ticket for adults is 28 USD. This also includes admission to the CancĂșn Scenic Tower, which offers breathtaking panoramic views.

Getting around the island

Once you arrive at the dock, you have several ways to explore the island:

  • Isleño Bus: This public bus runs from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM and covers various routes across the island. A single ride costs 20 MXN (approx. 1 USD), while a day pass for unlimited rides is 180 MXN (approx. 9 USD).
  • Taxis: Taxis are also available, with prices depending on the route. It’s recommended to agree on a fare before the ride.
  • Golf carts: A popular and fun option is to rent a golf cart to explore the island at your own pace – ideal especially for groups.

Highlights & sights

  • Punta Sur: Located at the southern tip of the island, Punta Sur features dramatic cliffs and stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. Here you’ll find the remains of an ancient Maya temple dedicated to the goddess Ixchel, along with a sculpture garden. Admission is 100 MXN (approx. 5.50 USD) for tourists.
  • Playa Norte: At the northern end of the island, Playa Norte invites visitors to relax on its white sands and swim in crystal-clear turquoise waters. The beachfront promenade offers many local restaurants and bars serving fresh seafood and regional specialties.

  • CancĂșn Scenic Tower: Admission is included with some ferry tickets (like Xcaret Xailing). The tower offers a 360-degree panoramic view of CancĂșn and the surrounding landscape.
  • Evening traffic: Between 6:00 and 7:00 PM, traffic may increase, especially for buses and taxis. It’s a good idea to return earlier or plan extra time for your trip back.
